New Year, New You with the Help of Co-op Cooking Classes

Is one of your resolutions to be healthier? BriarPatch Co-op is offering a range of classes this January to aid you on your journey toward healthy cooking.

Ring in the New Year with a healthy celebration of food and fun at the “Paleo Potluck” on Sunday, January 4, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. For the small entry fee of $5.00, join Hilary Dart, teachers, and students in sharing and enjoying a Paleo meal. Bring a dish to share or something simple that can be made in the cooking school kitchen.

Want to pack more veggies into your winter meals? Ready to learn three quick and easy soups that are jam-packed with vital, fresh flavors on Wednesday, January 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.? Leah Walsh will share the simple formula that makes a raw soup a success, and will present some of her favorite recipes including Fresh Pea Soup, Tomato Mushroom Bisque, and a heartwarming Carrot Ginger Soup. Raw soups can be served cold or warmed.

One of the most important tools in the kitchen is the knife. Kayla Wexelberg will show how to properly treat and sharpen a good knife, how to hold it, what makes a good knife, and ways to spruce up old and new dishes with new cuts on Thursday, January 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Kayla returns with “Homemade Elixirs for Wintertime” on Thursday, January 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The class will concoct delicious herbal remedies, made with healing herbs. A few of the elixirs explored in class will be a Turmeric Ginger Red Root Coconut Milk Latte, Damiana Maca Cocoa Nightcap, Nutmeg Cinnamon Marshmallow Taste Sensation, Rosemary Clover Citrus Honey Tea, and a special Chai. Cozy winter snacks will also be included.

The Patch’s Chicken and Wild Rice Soup is one of the deli’s most popular items. Learn from the source, BriarPatch Chef Doug Schma, on Saturday, January 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Doug will reveal the recipe and method so attendees can make this coveted dish at home. This comforting soup, so nice for the cold and flu season, will be served along with salad and apple crisp for dessert.

January ends on a helpful note with “DIY Organic Winter Skin Care.”
Taught by Rachel Berry on Saturday, January 31, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., class attendees will learn how to make high quality, organic skin cream at home to nourish dry, winter skin. Not only is making your own skin care fun, it’s also economical, and you can customize your personal blends based on your individual skin care needs.
